Old Klipsch ProMedia v2-400's subwoofer acting weird. Time for a new speaker set?

Hello!

For some reason, I get too much bass or too little even though I haven't
touched the computer's volume mixer (Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS)
and speaker volume controls.

With very little bass, I noticed if I turn my subwoofer from its lowest
setting a little higher, then I feel a lot of bass for a second. Does
the speaker have limit controller or something? I checked the cables
behind the subwoofer, and they seems fine.

I wonder if my old speaker set is dying (time for a new speaker set). I
have had it since December 1999. Has anyone had this problem before? If
so, then how did you fix it?

If it is dying, then what 2.1/4.1 simple speaker set should I buy from
local retail stores in Los Angeles and Orange County areas, CA? I want
to hear and see the speakers in person too. I mainly use the speakers
for my computer games, music (listening only), DVDs, HDTV, etc. I love
bass. :)

Thank you in advance. :)

Something is likely happening to the amp, but it could be the speaker.
I am fairly impressed with the Logitec products for general use. Which
systems have big bass capibility is unknown by me. You can always
piece together your own for more money.

It seems fine today so far. We'll see how it lasts.

Nah, I am not a builder type of guy and it doesn't help when I have
multiple disabilities. :(

Ant,

When you mess with the bass control does it sound or feel dirty? It may
betime to spray all of the amp's pots with cleaner.

Well I turn the knob on the speaker's control pod, it feels a little
harder to turn (not impossible) compared to my volume speaker knob. But
then surround knob also feels harder to turn than volume knob. I think
because I use volume knob all the time and I rarely use surround and
subwoofer knobs.

I am not an audio expert, but I assume amp is the one behind my
subwoofer with all the little thin wires. If so, then yea it is probably
really dusty back there (on the carpeted floor). I haven't looked back
there for years (maybe since early 2000)!

FYI: http://www.klipsch.com/products/details/promedia-v-2-400.aspx for
my speakers.

Ant,

Thanks for the picture. I can't tell from it whether you have tone
controls. It looks as if the pre amp is called a "control pod". Can you
bypass the pod, send a line level signal to each channel while using a pot
to control the volume and see if the bass is better. I'm not clear on why
you suspect the sub-woofer as opposed to other causes.
If this all sounds like gibberish to you then investigate how much it
will cost to have a repair guy look at your equipment.

Yep, all gibberish and I have no idea how to bypass the pod and stuff. I
think I would be better to get a new speaker set (still have to figure
out which one to get) since I had this since 1999 when it came out (only
if the speaker is indeed broken, dying, or dead).

I couldn't find a PDF manual online, but I still have my hardcopy. I
noticed it said to hook subwoofer to my speakers: "Step 2: Connect the
DIN plug to the subwoofer from the control satellite preamp." I guess
the preamp is where my controls are.

Then, another page said "Connect the Control Pod output, which is the
round DIN multi-pin plug into the v.2-400 subwoofer "Preamp Input." This
cable attaches the Control Pod to the five-channel power amplifier
inside the subwoofer. One of the amplifier channels powers the subwoofer
itself while the other four amplifier sections feed the satellite
speakers through their own speaker cables."

On another page, "Amplifier -- BASH (Bridged Amplifier/Switching Hybird)
design with high efficiency/high output power. Discrete MOSFET output
power section for high current, maximum dynamic headroom..."
